About Me

In 2007 I started working in gyms alongside my university course. I have built a career working across a varied range of gyms; from large commercial sites to small independent and community gyms. I enjoy studying different styles of training to develop my knowledge base and support members.

I have had the opportunity to train a wide range of people, I am very proud that this incudes a 4x Para World Champion and Paralympic Gold Medal Cyclist

My Approach

I want to get you moving. For those who spend their days at a desk I feel it is important to get away from machines. Using bodyweight, dumbbells, kettlebells and other equipment to replicate day to day movements to build strength and fitness. I like to use circuits or supersets in my sessions to utilise your time in the gym.

Let’s Work Together

I want you to enjoy your training and develop new skills so that you can walk into any gym and train with confidence. I’m not here to count your reps for you!

Wellington Health and Fitness hosted the Berkshire Closed Over-45s tournament, where Paul Johnson triumphed over Wellington’s own Jeremy Baker in a thrilling five-set final.

Paul’s path to the final saw him secure dominant 3–0 victories over Tom Pitt and Jay Morris. Jeremy, however, faced a much tougher challenge in his semi-final against Steve Dodridge. In a gripping contest between two former champions, Jeremy took the first game 11–4, but Doddi responded by winning the second 11–7. Jeremy regained the lead with an 11–3 win in the third, only for Doddi to edge the fourth 11–9 after trailing 9–8. The deciding set was fiercely contested, but Jeremy held his nerve to win 11–7, taking the match 3–2. A fantastic battle and a great match to watch!

Sunday’s final saw Paul race into a 2–0 lead, winning the first two games 11–5 and 11–8. However, Jeremy fought back, tightening his play and reducing errors to claim the third and fourth sets 11–7 and 11–4. The decisive fifth set was a nail-biter, with Jeremy leading 10–6. But Paul dug deep, displaying incredible retrieval skills and unleashing some stunning backhand volleys to mount an impressive comeback and secure victory 15–13. It was an outstanding match, keeping spectators on the edge of the balcony—including me!

With this win, Paul completes the full set of county titles. He was Doubles Champion with Andrew Lewis in 1997/98, Closed Champion in 2000, Over-35 Champion in 2009/10, and now, Over-45 Champion—an extraordinary achievement, making him the only player in Berkshire to have claimed all these titles.

In the Plate Final, Jay Morris, also from Wellington, made a memorable tournament debut just one day after turning 45. The youngest competitor in the draw, he put in a dominant performance to defeat Richard Bodkin 3–0 (11–2, 11–6, 11–3). Congratulations, Jay!

Several past champions attended to support the tournament, including two from Wellington: Graham Hooper, a five-time winner, and Dave Weston, who has claimed the title twice. A special tribute was paid to Phil Tuck, who tragically passed away last year. Phil was a generous supporter of the event, kindly sponsoring Taittinger champagne as a prize for many years.

A huge thank you to Wellington and its staff, whose exceptional support continues to make this tournament such a success year after year.

ENQUIRE ABOUT ONE TO ONE OR TWO TO ONE LESSONS

At Wellington Health and Fitness Club, we believe everyone has a reason for starting their journey with us—a “why” that drives them to embrace health, fitness, and well-being. This January, we’re celebrating those reasons with our “What’s Your Why” campaign, and we invite all our members to get involved.

Why We Move
For some, it’s about gaining strength or improving physical health. For others, it’s a mental escape, a chance to focus on self-care and recharge. Whether it’s training for a marathon, recovering from an injury, or finding a supportive community, each reason is as unique as the person behind it.

The Power of Sharing
We’ve set up a special picture board at the club, where members can have a Polaroid photo taken and write down their “why”. By sharing your reason, you might spark a connection, inspire someone to start their journey, or motivate a fellow member to keep going.

Transforming Lives
Joining a health and fitness club isn’t just about physical transformation—it’s about enhancing your overall quality of life. Studies show that regular exercise improves mental health, boosts energy levels, and fosters a sense of community. At Wellington, we see this first-hand every day, as members form friendships, achieve goals, and build healthier lifestyles.

Encouragement and Support
The path to health and fitness is deeply personal, but it doesn’t have to be walked alone. Encouragement and support are key to sustaining progress, and this campaign is a reminder that we’re all in this together. Your “why” might be the reason someone else finds their own.

Join the Conversation
We can’t wait to hear your stories and celebrate your journeys. Stop by the club, add your photo to the board, and share your reason. Let’s inspire each other to keep moving forward, one step, one lift, one class at a time.

What’s your why?

As General Manager, Matt Norris is tasked with guiding the Club through its next chapter in a long and storied history.

Born and raised in South Wales, Matt’s primary passion was football. At 16, he signed professionally for Middlesbrough Football Club. After being released at 21, he pursued and achieved a BSc Hons in Sports and Fitness Science.

Since then, his career in health and fitness management has taken him around the world. Most recently, Matt launched clubs in Southeast Asia before returning to the UK to open and develop clubs in London with Fitness First.

To learn more about Matt, we asked him some direct questions, and he shared sharp, insightful answers:

Matt, what convinced you to take this job?
What an opportunity! The Club has such potential and a great legacy with a strong community. Personally, I was drawn by the chance to use my experience in developing a unique brand.

Four months in, what are your early impressions?
Lots of good, exciting possibilities. I always call this a period of discovery – often, you need a little time to embed ideas. Every day brings a different learning experience. However, the most important lessons right now are listening to our members and creating outputs that benefit them, the team, and the community.

You always appear very relaxed and approachable. Coming from a corporate background, how would you describe your management style?
I’ve been fortunate to have great mentors throughout my career and experience with some big brands. I’m passionate about people and how we can be a force for good. I place a strong emphasis on safety, service, and standards, fostering a team culture with our staff and members to become “stronger together.”
